Great Mills High School Gunman Shot And Killed Himself: Sheriff

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said Austin Rollins fatally shot himself at Great Mills High School in southern Maryland.

GREAT MILLS, MD — The student who shot two of his peers at Great Mills High School on March 20 fatally shot himself three minutes later, officials say. Gunman Austin Wyatt Rollins and one of his victims later died, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. Authorities released the suicide determination on Monday, along with a more detailed timeline of the shooting.

Rollins, 17, drove into his high school parking lot in southern Maryland at 7:50 a.m. that Tuesday, officials reported. He walked into school at 7:52 a.m. and approached his ex-girlfriend in the hallway five minutes later. Jaelynn Willey, 16, had been in a relationship with Rollins that recently ended, officials said.

Authorities said Rollins shot her once in the head at 7:57 a.m. St. Mary's County Sheriff Timothy Cameron previously said investigators believed Willey was targeted. The first round also hit fellow student Desmond Barnes, 14. He was shot in the leg and hid in a classroom, where authorities said that responding officers found him.

Within 31 seconds of Rollins and the officer encountering each other, Rollins pointed the gun at himself and "fired one fatal shot to his head," the sheriff's office said in a statement Monday, March 26.

Just as Rollins shot himself, officials said the school resource officer fired a nonfatal shot that hit the gun in the boy's hand.

Immediately after the shooting, deputies, troopers and school nursing staff provided first aid.

Rollins was pronounced deceased at 10:41 a.m. that day at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Cameron said.

Willey was taken to the Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, where her family said she was taken off life support Thursday night.

Barnes was taken to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown and was released on Wednesday.
