ANNAPOLIS, MD — The coronavirus pandemic has put a tremendous strain on nearly everyone and everything — on families and communities, on society and the economy, on governments and other institutions. Maryland was one of the first states to close schools, non-essential businesses and order residents to stay home. Patch wants to know how you think everyone is doing.

We've created a survey with questions in three main areas: on how you view the performance of governments and key elected officials during the crisis; on how you and your family have been affected economically; and how well you and your community have followed guidelines on social distancing and staying at home.

The survey is not meant to be a scientific poll, with random sampling and margins of error. It's meant only to gauge the sentiments of our readers in an informal way. But we hope it gives a broad idea of public attitudes at a difficult time for everyone.

Gov. Larry Hogan has made national headlines for buying a half-million coronavirus test kits from South Korea, and at times sparring with President Trump on the federal response to the pandemic.

State health officials reported Thursday that the virus has taken the lives of 1,047 Marylanders, with test results pending from another 93 people for whom COVID-19 was listed as a cause of death on their death certificates, according to authorities. Residents and staff at nursing homes account for almost 22 percent of Maryland's coronavirus cases and more 49 percent of its deaths.
