The Democracy Initiative is a coalition of 75 labor, civil rights and environmental organizations that work on campaigns to expand voting rights, address climate change, bring fairness to U.S. workplaces, limit the role of big money in politics, and confront the legacy of systemic racism.

In Maryland, Carter has worked for the ACLU, been executive director of Maryland Working Families, and founded Step Up Maryland, a training organization for progressive activists.

Carter is also a member of the Maryland Matters board of directors.

“I am honored to join the Democracy Initiative at such a pivotal time,” Carter said. “Never has it been so important for every person to be engaged in the fight for our democracy. I look forward to working with the team and coalition partner to mobilize our 45 million members in the fight for the soul of our nation. Together we will rebuild the infrastructure of our democracy.”
