4 Hospitalized, 1 Dead After Illegal Pass: Police

An illegal pass caused a crash that hospitalized four people and killed another, police said.

FRIENDSHIP, MD — Police said a crash in Friendship sent four people to the hospital Monday evening. One of the victims died from their injuries, an incident report added.

Officers identified the deceased woman as Mary Char-Lynn Phipps of Brandywine. Police said Phipps died early Tuesday morning. She he was 53.

Officers heard word of the wreck around 7 p.m. on Monday. The accident happened at the intersection of Chesapeake Beach Road and Sansbury Road.

The report noted that a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze was following a Dodge Ram westbound on Chesapeake Beach Road. Investigators claimed that the Chevrolet crossed the centerline and tried to pass the Dodge in a no-passing zone.

During the maneuver, the Chevrolet collided head-on with a 2012 Honda Accord driving east, police noted.

The two cars came to a rest off the roadway, according to the report. The writeup added that fire department had to cut through debris to save several passengers in each car.

Two Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopters flew three patients to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, officers said. Medics took one passenger to Calvert Memorial Hospital, police added.

The Chevrolet had three occupants. The deceased woman was one of them, according to the report.

Officers said the driver, who they identified as 24-year-old Megan Elyce Dial of Lothian, is in critical condition. The third passenger suffered minor wounds.

The Honda had two occupants. The driver's injuries are serious, police noted. The passenger's wounds are not life-threatening.

Officers said the preliminary cause of the collision appears to be that the Chevrolet crossed the centerline. The Anne Arundel County Police Department is still investigating the crash.
