50% Vaccination Achieved In Anne Arundel, Hospital Count Hits Low

Anne Arundel passed 50 percent vaccination last week. The county also posted a record low hospitalization total and case rate.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Around 51 percent of Anne Arundel County residents are fully inoculated. About 56 percent have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Seventy-three percent of Maryland adults have gotten at least one shot.

In other news, the coronavirus case rate is at its best clip since March 2020. The hospitalization count is hovering around its lowest mark ever. Plus, the percent positivity hit a record low.

Last week's 39 cases are down 11 from the week prior. This was the third time the county tallied less than 100 new infections in a week since March 2020.

This is also the seventh straight week that Anne Arundel posted less than 500 cases in a seven-day span. Before this stretch, the county hadn't accomplished the feat since the week before Halloween. A 2.5-month spike followed the holiday.

That surge ended in January. The county has since recorded less than 1,000 new cases for 18 straight weeks.

The virus also killed three county residents last week, which is three fewer than the seven days prior, the Maryland Department of Health said. Here's a look at where the numbers stand in Anne Arundel County.

Full Vaccinations

  • Currently: 50.72 percent
  • Trend: Up by 1.5 percentage points
  • Rank: 8th out of the state's 24 jurisdictions
  • Trend: No change
  • Comments: New full immunizations slowed slightly last week and fell short of the record high. New full inoculations have declined in seven of the past ten weeks.

At Least One Dose

  • Currently: 56.18 percent
  • Trend: Up by 0.61 percentage points

This is the percentage of residents who have gotten at least one dose of the inoculation. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines both require two shots. The Johnson & Johnson immunization only has one injection.

Coronavirus Case Rate

  • Currently: 0.96
  • Trend: Down by 0.27
  • Comments: New cases declined for the tenth straight week. Before that, infections climbed for seven consecutive weeks. This is the lowest clip since March 26, 2020.
  • Recent High: 24.74 on April 14
  • Recent Low: 0.96 on June 18, June 19 and June 20
  • Overall High: 64.99 on Jan. 12
  • Overall Low: 0.47 on March 23, 2020

Hospitalizations

  • Currently: 5
  • Trend: Up by 2
  • Comments: Hospitalizations rose for the first time in 10 weeks. Still, they have dipped by 84 in this span. Last Friday saw a single hospitalization. That was the lowest mark the county has ever seen during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Recent High: 99 on April 13
  • Recent Low: 1 on June 18
  • Overall High: 172 on April 21, 2020
  • Overall Low: 1 on June 18

ICU Hospitalizations

  • Currently: 0
  • Trend: Down by 1
  • Comments: ICU hospitalizations fell for the fourth straight week. They have declined in six of the last seven weeks. The ICU count hit zero for the first time on June 9. It has since increased slightly and returned to zero for several days.
  • Recent High: 43 on Jan. 14
  • Recent Low: 0 on June 20
  • Overall High: 49 on May 13, 2020
  • Overall Low: 0 on several occasions. The first time was June 9. The most recent was June 20.

Positivity Rate

  • Currently: 0.7 percent
  • Trend: Down by 0.1 percentage points
  • Comments: The positivity rate declined for the tenth straight week. It was on a six-week hike before that. The percent positivity was even less last Friday when it fell to 0.67. That was the lowest the county has ever seen.
  • Recent High: 7.47 percent on April 8
  • Recent Low: 0.67 percent on June 18
  • Overall High: 28.16 percent on April 16, 2020
  • Overall Low: 0.67 percent on June 18

Total Cases And Deaths

Anne Arundel County's 43,930 coronavirus infections are the fifth most in the state. The virus is blamed for the death of 645 county residents.
