AACPS Snow Day Meme Channels Oprah Moment

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — After a snowstorm hit Maryland on Sunday, Anne Arundel County Public Schools got creative with its announcement that students had Monday off. The school system joked about the closure, posting a meme depicting one of Oprah Winfrey's most iconic moments.

"You get a snow day," the meme proclaims. "Everyone gets a snow day."

The meme is inspired by a 2004 episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." During the broadcast, Winfrey's team handed all 276 audience members a gift box. Winfrey told the attendees that one package had the key to a new car. In reality, Winfrey was setting them up for a bigger surprise.

When everybody opened their gifts, they saw that every box had a key. The room erupted in cheers, as everyone realized the entire audience got a car.

"You get a car," Winfrey repeatedly shouted to clarify that everyone was a winner. "Everybody gets a car!"

The frenzy eventually became the basis for a widely-shared meme. AACPS's version is shown below. By 4 p.m. Monday, the Facebook post had nearly 60 shares, 325 comments and 1,000 reactions.

AACPS has a tendency for fun snow day announcements. In January of 2016, the school system announced a closure with a parody of Adele's hit song "Hello." That rendition is viewable below.
