Since the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began in Maryland in March 2020, Admiral Heights residents have volunteered to weed and mulch community areas. Requests for volunteers have gone out four times – twice for weeding and twice for mulching. Responses ranged from two to 12 volunteers.

One event was held at Dewey Dock. The other three were held at the Sampson-Porter Circle. Volunteer efforts helped improve the appearance of these areas, fight erosion, cut down on weeds, and retain moisture in the soil.

This year’s volunteers were a little nostalgic. One thought about GreenScape, a city and community partnership to beautify, clean up, and plant in public spaces throughout Annapolis. The spring GreenScape was canceled due to the pandemic. Some noted that they weren’t hitting the gym this year. Instead, they were focusing on yard work. Others were normally involved in other volunteer activities, but this year those activities had been curtailed because of the pandemic.

They were all unified in their love of Admiral Heights and their desire to be an active part of the community. Thanks go to all the event organizers and volunteers, and it has to be said: there are going to be more weeds and many more volunteer opportunities. Admiral Heights residents can watch for requests on Facebook and/or sign up to receive emails by going to the Admiral Heights website, http://www.admiralheights.org/email-list.html.
