Anne Arundel Sets Record Lows For ICU Total, Positivity Rate

With more than half the county partially vaccinated, Anne Arundel has reached record lows in its ICU hospitalizations and positivity rate.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Around 45 percent of Anne Arundel County residents are fully inoculated. About 54 percent have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

In other news, the coronavirus case rate is at its best clip since March 2020. The hospitalization count is hovering around its lowest mark since April 2020. Plus, the percent positivity is at a record low.

Last week's 143 cases are down 51 from the week prior. This is the fourth straight week that Anne Arundel posted less than 500 infections in a seven-day span. Before this stretch, the county hadn't accomplished the feat since the week before Halloween. A 2.5-month spike followed the holiday.

That surge ended in January. The county has since recorded less than 1,000 new cases for 15 straight weeks.

The virus also killed 29 county residents last week, which is 22 more than the seven days prior, the Maryland Department of Health said. This number is inflated because health officials last week reviewed several likely coronavirus deaths and determined that the disease was what truly took these lives. Here's a look at where the numbers stand in Anne Arundel County.

Full Vaccinations

  • Currently: 44.83 percent
  • Trend: Up by 2.5 percentage points
  • Rank: 11th out of the state's 24 jurisdictions
  • Trend: No change
  • Comments: New full immunizations slowed down last week and fell short of the record high. New full inoculations have declined in five of the past seven weeks.

At Least One Dose

  • Currently: 53.85 percent
  • Trend: Up by 1.66 percentage points

This is the percentage of residents who have gotten at least one dose of the inoculation. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines both require two shots. The Johnson & Johnson immunization only has one injection.

Coronavirus Case Rate

  • Currently: 3.03
  • Trend: Down by 1.75
  • Comments: New cases declined for the seventh straight week. Before that, infections climbed for seven consecutive weeks. This is the lowest clip since March 31, 2020.
  • Recent High: 24.74 on April 14
  • Recent Low: 3.03 on May 31
  • Overall High: 64.99 on Jan. 12
  • Overall Low: 0.47 on March 23, 2020

Hospitalizations

  • Currently: 22
  • Trend: Down by 7
  • Comments: Hospitalizations dropped for the seventh straight week. They have dipped by 64 in this span. Hospitalizations were even lower on Sunday when they fell to 19. That was the lowest mark since April 2, 2020.
  • Recent High: 99 on April 13
  • Recent Low: 19 on May 30
  • Overall High: 172 on April 21, 2020
  • Overall Low: 14 on April 2, 2020

ICU Hospitalizations

  • Currently: 5
  • Trend: Down by 4
  • Comments: After rising the week prior, ICU hospitalizations declined last week. They have dropped in three of the last four weeks. ICU hospitalizations were even lower on Sunday when they fell to four. That was the lowest count since Aug. 24, 2020, and it is tied for the slimmest total Anne Arundel has ever seen.
  • Recent High: 43 on Jan. 14
  • Recent Low: 4 on May 30
  • Overall High: 49 on May 13, 2020
  • Overall Low: 4 on May 30

Positivity Rate

  • Currently: 1.76 percent
  • Trend: Down by 0.52 percentage points
  • Comments: The positivity rate declined for the seventh straight week. It was on a six-week hike before that. The percent positivity was even lower on Friday and Saturday. That's when the metric dipped to 1.75 percent. This was the lowest percent positivity the county has ever had.
  • Recent High: 7.47 percent on April 8
  • Recent Low: 1.75 percent on May 29
  • Overall High: 28.16 percent on April 16, 2020
  • Overall Low: 1.75 percent on May 29

Total Cases And Deaths

Anne Arundel County's 43,787 coronavirus infections are the fifth most in the state. The virus is blamed for the death of 631 county residents.
