Attempted Murder Suspect Found Guilty: Officials

A jury found a Baltimore man guilty of attempted murder in Anne Arundel County, officials said. This was the first jury trial in months.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Officials announced Tuesday that a jury found a Baltimore man guilty of attempted murder in Anne Arundel County. The jurors said 26-year-old Andy Reyes is guilty of:

  • Attempting first-degree murder
  • Using a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence
  • Wearing, carrying and transporting a handgun on his person
  • Possessing a loaded handgun

"The combination of good police work by the Anne Arundel County Police Department and our prosecution team, coupled with the powerful testimony of the surviving victim resulted in the jury rendering a just verdict," Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in a press release. "The defendant is no longer a danger to our community and will be held accountable for his deplorable actions."

Authorities noted that the shooting happened in the 200 block of Hilltop Road on Dec. 28, 2019. Police found neighbors helping the 27-year-old victim who was shot 11 times, an incident report added.

Medics took the unresponsive victim to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he had multiple surgeries, prosecutors mentioned. The write-up indicated that doctors worked on bullet wounds to his heart and brachial artery among other places. The victim went into cardiac arrest several times during the operations, but the report shared that surgeons revived him.

Officials explained that the victim's family reached out to police two days later, telling officers that he could now speak, though he was still in the hospital. The victim alleged that Reyes was the shooter. He also informed that Reyes was close friends with his girlfriend.

"When victims and witnesses of violent crime come forward and cooperate with law enforcement, these are the results," Leitess concluded. "When our community refuses to tolerate violence, we will be safer."

Authorities reported that a judge will sentence Reyes on June 29. His charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison plus 26 years, the release clarified. Actual sentences tend to be less than maximums, however.

This was the first jury trial since Anne Arundel County courts reopened from their coronavirus shutdowns, the prosecution stated.
