Bay Bridge Roadwork Resumes Next Week: What To Expect

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Weather permitting, roadwork will resume next week on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, highway officials announced Tuesday. The construction will only affect the westbound span, which heads from the Eastern Shore toward Annapolis.

Crews will close the center and left lanes overnight while they replace the joints of the bridge. Steel plates will cover the gaps during the day, allowing all lanes to open during peak travel times.

The Maryland Transportation Authority, which operates the bridge, said the project was originally slated to finish this fall. Workers are ahead of schedule, however, and they hope to wrap it up by the end of May. Poor weather could delay this target, however.

This rehabilitation effort will finish the work that started last spring when the right lane was closed 24/7. Crews eventually moved to the center and left lanes, but they paused construction over the winter so snowplows didn't damage the temporary plates.

"We thank our bridge customers and the surrounding communities for their patience during this necessary work to keep the bridge safe," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a press release.
