Body Of Missing Boater Found 25 Hours After Crash On South River

On Wednesday, crews recovered the body of a 68-year-old man who went missing on the South River, following a Tuesday afternoon boat crash.

EDGEWATER, MD — Crews recovered the body of a man who went missing on the South River, following a Tuesday afternoon boat crash. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department announced that teams found the deceased boater, around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Maryland Natural Resources Police identified the man as 68-year-old Robert Stup.

Recovery crews searched for the Frederick man for about eight hours on Tuesday before suspending operations overnight. They got back to work in the morning, eventually locating the his body.

The accident happened around 12:23 p.m. on Tuesday when two boats collided near Turkey Point, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department says. One watercraft was a 41-foot cabin cruiser. The other was a 16-foot Jon Boat. Both vessel had two occupants.

The collision threw both passengers of the Jon Boat into the water. The cabin cruiser drivers pulled one of the Jon Boat travelers onto their boat. The surviving Jon Boat rider suffered minor injuries.

Nobody could find Stup for 25 hours, however. Officials have not yet announced the names or hometowns of the other boaters involved.

"Operations on the scene are transitioning from rescue to recovery with marine units and divers continuing the search for the missing occupant," the Anne Arundel County Fire Department tweeted Tuesday at 1:37 p.m.

The county department worked with the Annapolis Fire Department, the Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Maryland State Police to find Stup. The agencies deployed a team of boaters, divers and helicopter pilots to find him.
