Eastport Bridge Run Returns In Virtual Format

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Maritime Republic of Eastport will host its annual 0.05k Bridge Run. This year's race will be virtual, however.

Organizers canceled last year's event without a virtual alternative because of the coronavirus pandemic. In years past, runners have sprinted across the Spa Creek Drawbridge from downtown Annapolis to Eastport.

"This has been a tough year for what is usually a vibrant social environment in Eastport," MRE Premier Harry Lockley said in a press release. "As long as we can do it safely, it’s definitely time to restart events like the 0.05K Bridge Run."

This year's participants will submit videos of them running the normal distance of 164 feet. They can complete the sprint anywhere in the world.

Runners must send their videos by Saturday at noon. That's when judges will host a Facebook Live looking for marathoners with the:

• First place time
• Second place time
• Third place time
• Fastest pet
• Best pet appearance
• Best cinematography
• Most original video techniques
• Best location for creative scenery
• Funniest video

Interested residents can sign up for $20 at themre.org/bridgerun. Runners will also get a T-shirt when they register.

Proceeds benefit Feed Anne Arundel. The nonprofit pays restaurant workers to make meals for those in need during the pandemic.

"These [races] not only support local charities but help define the unique character of our neighborhood and our city," Lockley added. "It’s the first time we’ve done this as a virtual event, so we hope we can enjoy the same spirit and camaraderie online as we do in person."

The MRE also hosts the annual tug of war between Annapolis and Eastport each fall.
