Garden Club And Annapolis City Encourage May Basket Floral Tradition On May Day

Annapolis (April 20, 2020) - In an effort to continue the longtime tradition of May Day, the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne is encouraging Annapolis residents and businesses to celebrate May Day 2020 by setting out a basket of flowers on May 1st.

For 65 years, the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne has sponsored a May Basket competition in downtown Annapolis and Murray Hill and has awarded blue ribbons to the best baskets. Due to this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing mandates, the Garden Club will not be able to award blue ribbons, but encourages everyone to brighten the Cityscape by displaying colorful baskets of flowers and ribbons in front of their houses or businesses.

“We all look forward to seeing the baskets on display on May 1,” Mayor Gavin Buckley said. “We still have flowers. We still have front doors. Let’s keep it going!”

In a showing of gratitude and appreciation of all of the numerous healthcare workers and many other helpers in our community, the Garden Club invites everyone to be creative and colorful by using flowers that you already have in your own garden and other crafts, ribbons, paper, etc.

Please set out your May “basket” by 10 a.m. on Friday, May 1, so that our community has a full day of viewing the colorful baskets around town. Of course, please continue to follow all social distancing guidelines and safety measures while walking through town.
