Jan Russell Hawthorne, 85, Of Annapolis: Obituary

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Jan Russell Hawthorne, 85, of Annapolis, MD passed away on April 4, 2017. Russell was born on December 21, 1931 in Lackawanna, NY. He worked as a metallurgist at the Naval Research Laboratory, and the Material Engineering Institute.

Russell had an incredible mind, a great sense of humor with a gift for writing and who loved a good joke. He had a great love of nature, was an accomplished engineer and builder of many things, and was also an accomplished cook. His quiet exterior hid a sensitive, tender soul who doted on his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Marcia Hawthorne; daughters, Jennifer Hawthorne, and Terry Nan; and his brother, Jerry. He is survived by his daughter, Liz Soares of California; and two grandsons, Joshua Soares and Karl Nan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 am on Tuesday, April 11 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD.
