Maryland Sets Another Record Giving 60K COVID-19 Shots In One Day

CDC data ranks the state 19th in the nation for the number of residents who have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination.

MARYLAND — Another daily goal has been reached in Maryland's quest to expediently vaccinate its residents against COVID-19. Gov. Larry Hogan announced Friday that for the first time, more than 60,000 COVID-19 vaccinations had been administered in a single day in the state. The governor also reported a new record seven-day average of 46,817 shots per day.

Specifically, a record-setting 64,286 new vaccinations have been given in a single day and a total of 2,422,963 vaccinations have been administered to date. According to CDC data, 34.7 percent of Marylanders 18 and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, ranking the state 19th in the nation.

“Our plan to maximize the points of vaccine distribution in every jurisdiction is working, as we are hitting new record highs for vaccinations on an almost daily basis,” Hogan said in a news release. “I want to sincerely thank all the vaccinators, the Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland National Guard, the hospitals, the pharmacies, the local health departments and the thousands of dedicated people who have been literally working around the clock seven days a week. It is thanks to them that we have built the infrastructure capacity, and we are now being promised the supply to be able to vaccinate every Marylander who wants a vaccine in the next couple of months.”

On Thursday, the governor toured the state’s newest mass vaccination site, located in western Maryland at the Hagerstown Premium Outlets. Earlier this week, the governor announced that the state will open six more mass vaccination sites beginning in early April, doubling the number to 12 as the state prepares for a significant increase in vaccine supply from the federal government.

Currently, Maryland is in Phase 2A of its vaccine distribution plan, prioritizing all residents age 60 and older, as well as all Marylanders previously eligible in Phase 1. Phase 2B will begin March 30 and includes Marylanders age 16 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe COVID-19 illness, as well as Marylanders with disabilities.
