MARYLAND — Brilliant fall colors are peaking in the trees of eastern and southern Maryland this weekend, while the fall show is over in western and northeast parts of the state. Cunningham Falls and Gambrill state parks are well past peak now, say Maryland Department of Natural Resources reports, and Carroll County is also past the peak for leaf peeping. Patapsco Valley State Park is either at peak or passing peak.

On the Eastern Shore in Worcester County, Assateague State Park is seeing plenty of autumn change.

And in southern Maryland,"Most trees are in full color and it looks like a very nice fall season and weekend ahead, especially with the recent dip in the temperatures,” says Brian Stupak, Forest Service project manager in Prince Frederick.

“Occasional lingering red maples and sugar maples are at peak or just past," said Forester Frank Lopez, Harford-Cecil project manager in Bel Air. "American beech is starting to change from the top down in the woods. ... Some dogwoods hanging on yet. ... Some white oak is a little past peak. Northern red oak are still green. Witch-hazel is past peak but still colorful. Some yellow-poplar hangs on with “dirty” gold leaves, while serviceberry is past peak.”

And in Anne Aundel County, “tawny reds and oranges dot Sandy Point State Park where we are looking at the backside of peak color,” said Ranger Dorna Cooper, park manager, in the DNR's weekly foliage report.
