MD Food Bank Needs Donations, Volunteers As Giving Tuesday Nears
The pandemic has left many locals without a reliable food source. The Maryland Food Bank needs help providing for these families.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Giving Tuesday is on Dec. 1. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to rattle the economy and leave many Marylanders without a reliable source of food.
That means the Maryland Food Bank needs all the help it can get. Given the food bank's scale, a monetary donation is the most powerful way to give. With a single dollar, the food bank can purchase six meals.
A $50 donation can feed an older person for one month. $100 buys meals for a service member's family for a four weeks. $500 provides supplies to teach kids about eating healthy, and $1,000 stocks a school pantry for 30 days.

The food bank also takes volunteers. The organization is looking for helpers aged 13 to 60 to help sort food. Sign up to volunteer here.

Marylanders can also organize a food drive or drop off goods at one of these sites. The food bank said its top needs are fruit (cups, cans, raisins and applesauce) and rice (white or brown). Other needs are posted online.
"Due to COVID-19, many Marylanders are experiencing hunger at the holidays for the first time," the Maryland Food Bank said on its website. "You can give your neighbors in need much-needed relief from the physical, economic, and emotional toll of the pandemic by helping provide a comforting holiday meal."

How To Help

Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2020, more than 50 million Americans will not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
