Naval Academy Students Participate in Ice Experiment

Alaska isn't the first destination that comes to mind as a place where students will spend spring break, but that's where five midshipmen from the Naval Academy Polar Science Program will be March 8-14.

The Naval Academy Ice Experiment (NAICEX) helps increase understanding and predictions of weather and climate in the Arctic region, according to a press release.

“NAICEX will give midshipmen the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Arctic environment they have studied for months,” said Naval Academy Oceanography Instructor Lt. Cmdr. John Woods, who will lead the midshipmen during the field operation. “As future naval officers, these midshipmen may operate in the Arctic one day, and the more understanding they have of this environment the better prepared they will be to face its challenges.”

Woods will lead the midshipmen during the field operation, in collaboration with the University of Delaware and the University of Washington, with the following midshipmen first class: Chuck Newnam of Milford, PA; Morgan Oblinsky of Virginia Beach, VA; Dagmara Broniatowska of Warsaw, Poland; Toni Paruso of Savannah, GA; and Molly Solmonson of Anchorage, AK.
