ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD--If you’ve noticed an intersection in your neighborhood that could use a stop sign, you’re not alone.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that one-third of all intersection crashes in the United States occur at crossings controlled by stop signs. While they aren’t a perfect solution to dangerous intersections, studies have shown that installing all-way signs can reduce accidents by 40 to 60 percent.

When we asked Patch Readers in Anne Arundel where they wanted to see a stop sign, some asked for stoplights while others just requested that drivers stop at the signs that are already in place. That’s not too much to ask according to a report from the Federal Highway Administration that showed the simple, and cheap, addition of “Stop Ahead” wording on roadways reduced accidents at controlled intersections by 15 percent.

We realize that no one knows the roads in Anne Arundel County better than its residents. Here’s what Patch Readers shared with us about their neighborhood’s intersections:

  • "Riedel and Chelmsford needs a stop sign or a traffic light like Tilghman. Impossible for Walden residents to turn left out of Chelmsford onto Riedel at peak times."
  • "Half the intersections in Woodland Beach."
  • "How about speed traps on Burns Crossing Rd outside of the Annapolis Area Christian School ?"
  • "The intersection of Route 3 North and Carver Road could use a traffic light that works during the high peak times of the day! It can be a nightmare there at times to cross the intersection, plus those crossing over Route 3 North from Carver Road have to deal with the impatient drivers coming from Route 3 South to turn onto Route 3 North."
  • "The stop sign at Governor's Bridge and Patuxent River Road should be removed since there is no plan to repair the bridge and allow through traffic."
  • "I'd love to see one on the South River at the mouth of Glebe Bay. Trying to cross the river on kayak gets rough when the bigger boats are zooming by in the Summer..."
  • "Pike ridge and 214....merge doesn't work"
  • "214 and Stepneys Lane....always accidents there and turning left on 214 (East bound) is nearly impossible. Lots of accidents, some with fatalities, check the history."
  • "Better yet, get people to stop at the ones we have."
