Principal Named for Phoenix Academy

The appointment of John Thompson as the inaugural principal of the Phoenix Academy was recently approved by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.

This news comes as construction progresses on the new facilities for Phoenix Academy, which will be housed in the former Germantown Elementary building on Cedar Park Road.

Phoenix Academy will offer special education and alternative education services to about 240 students beginning next year.

According to Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), Thompson is currently assistant principal at Phoenix Annapolis and was assistant principal at Annapolis High School from 2009 until this year. Phoenix Annapolis is currently located at 291 Locust Ave. and will move into its new center upon its completion. 

"Phoenix Academy will be a dynamic, community-oriented, educational setting that will serve as a model for multi-agency collaboration and cooperation, and will bring quality educational, social-emotional, and family support services to students and their families," according to AACPS.

The center will meet the needs of students from kindergarten through grade 12.

“I am truly humbled and excited to have the opportunity to lead a school that I know will make a significant difference in our county and in the lives of many students and their families,’’ Thompson said in a prepared statement.

Millions of dollars have gone into the modernization of the old building and expansion for Phoenix Academy. The entire project is 45 percent complete and is still on schedule for an August completion, according to the AACPS Construction Status Report that was presented to the board last month.
