Ret. Capt. Stanley M. Malm, 59, Former Annapolis Police Detective

Stanley Musial Malm, 59, of Glen Burnie, Maryland passed on April 3rd after a two and a half year battle with brain cancer in the company of family at home.

Stan was born in Sheffield, Alabama to Richard and Barbara Malm (nee Deatherage). He was raised and went to school in Omaha, Nebraska; Vienna, Virginia; Huntsville, Alabama and Arnold, Maryland. He is preceded in death by his mother, Barbara.

He is survived by his wife of four years, Natalie Malm; stepchildren, Sara and Garrett Hannon; father, Richard Malm of Arnold, MD; the mother of his children, Laura Malm, children: Stephanie Olienyk (nee Malm) of Millersville, MD and Stephen Malm of Baltimore, MD; grandson Tripp Olienyk; and sister, Nancy Tipton (nee Malm) and family of Eldersburg MD.

Stan’s many accomplishments included a 25-year career in law enforcement with the Annapolis Police Department. He retired as Captain, Chief of Detectives. During his tenure he held positions as patrol officer, marine officer, accident reconstructionist, hostage negotiator, traffic officer, supervisor of various units including special operations, uniform patrol, internal investigations, criminal intelligence unit and staff inspections.

His passion and gift for teaching led him to be a faculty member with Johns Hopkins University, Division of Public Safety Leadership for nine years. He taught courses about leadership, communication and the Holocaust. Stan’s ongoing research interest in the Holocaust provided him with the opportunity to serve as a docent in the Propaganda and Permanent Exhibits with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Stan was also selected to participate in the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers Program where he studied in Warsaw, Poland, Jerusalem.

Stan was also a lecturer with the University of Maryland, College Park in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice since 2001. He developed and taught courses for the Maryland Police Corps, Maryland Police Training Commission, U.S. Department of State (ICITAP) and the United States Secret Service.

In addition to his passion for playing soccer, he coached for Severna Park High School and River Hill High School for 14 years. Camping with family, being a Ravens and Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, visiting wineries and winemaking were Stan’s favorite hobbies.

Family and friends are welcomed for a memorial visitation on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm and a memorial service at 2:00 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home.
