Sculpture Display Proposed In Annapolis, Features Renowned Artist

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Annapolis arts group hopes to bring at least 12 large sculptures to the city streets. These pieces, along with several other smaller works, would bring art to areas with diverse economic backgrounds. The project is still recruiting sponsors, and it hopes to kick off later this year.

"The Annapolis Arts District is taking the lead to bring a new public art exhibition to Annapolis. The organization wants to bring at least a dozen large sculptures from artist David Hayes to Annapolis this fall for a one-year exhibition of modern art.

A David Hayes exhibition will provide Annapolis with diversity of form and function[. His] inventory of works includes paintings, works on paper, ceramics, and sculptures (both large and small).

This exhibition will allow the Annapolis Arts District to not only display large outdoor sculpture pieces, but also smaller works to be displayed in store front windows, restaurants, and gallery walls. This would allow stakeholders to participate in the exhibition who may not have access to large outdoor spaces.

American modern master David Hayes created graceful sculptures abstracted from organic forms over an artistic career that spanned six decades. His monumental outdoor sculptures contemplate the relationship between a work of art and the environment it occupies[,] and it shows the influence of teacher David Smith and friend Alexander Calder.

He received numerous awards for his work, including the Logan Prize for Sculpture from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1961 and an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for study in Paris and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

His work is displayed in over 100 public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the National Museum of American Art, and at St. [John's] College.

"The Hayes Foundation will cover the cost of several of the sculptures to be located in Annapolis communities that have typically lacked access to public art," says Erik Evans, Executive Director of the Annapolis Arts District. "This allows us the opportunity to bring public art directly into communities of all economic backgrounds."

The Annapolis Arts District is also seeking other potential funders, partners and community organizations that may wish to help fund, sponsor or have a sculpture or work of art located in their Annapolis community as part of this exhibition.

The Annapolis Arts District will be bringing educational programs to Annapolis to [complement] the exhibition and is seeking a part time contractor to assist the Annapolis Arts District board & committee chairs on installation, yearlong programming, marketing and fundraising for the Hayes Sculpture Exhibition within designated City locations.
