A Cambridge man was walking along Route 2 in Arnold on Wednesday night when he was hit by an SUV, say Anne Arundel County police.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Eastern Shore man was struck and killed by an SUV shortly before midnight Wednesday, Dec. 19, as he was walking along Ritchie Highway (Route 2) in Arnold, according to the Anne Arundel County police. The police are investigating the accident, which occurred in the southbound lanes of Ritchie Highway just north of the intersection with Arnold Road.

The police arrived at 11:50 p.m. at the scene of the accident, where they found William Marcus Jones, 44. He was declared dead at the scene by personnel with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, the police said.

A Toyota Highlander hit Jones while he was walking south in a travel lane of Ritchie Highway, the police said. The SUV's driver, Barbara Lee Lowndes, 73, of Edgewater, was not injured.

Jones lived in the 700 block of Church Street in Cambridge, according to a police report.

The report states that the preliminary cause of the accident "appears to be the pedestrian’s failure to yield to traffic in the roadway and failure to walk facing traffic."
