Vaccination Opens To New Age Group In Anne Arundel

Anne Arundel County will now vaccinate slightly younger residents. Here's everybody who can get the shot.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Residents age 60 and up are now eligible for the coronavirus vaccine at clinics operated by the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. With the expansion, the county is now in phase 2A of its immunization rollout.

Locals age 16 and up with an underlying health condition or a disability can get the shot on March 30 as part of stage 2B. Essential workers and everybody 55 and older will be eligible on April 13 in phase 2C. Anne Arundel will open the inoculation to all residents 16 and up on April 27 as part of stage 3.

County Executive Steuart Pittman announced the expansion Tuesday, hours after Maryland opened state and private clinics to residents in phase 2A of immunization. Pittman's timeline aligns exactly with Gov. Larry Hogan's forecast.

"I applaud Governor Hogan for setting these dates in advance so providers and residents can plan their futures," Pittman tweeted. "Please sign up for an appointment when it’s your turn."

Pittman said the move was possible thanks to a larger inoculation shipment from the Maryland Department of Health. Hogan added that allocations from the federal government should grow even more next week, creating a faster shot rollout. Anne Arundel County will open a mass vaccination site in the week of April 12 to dole out these additional doses.

Though 60-year-olds are now eligible, earlier priority groups will still take precedence. That means residents in stages 1A, 1B and 1C may get appointments sooner than those in phase 2A.

"As always, our vaccination rollout will continue to focus on our community's most vulnerable populations," Elin Jones, a spokesperson for the county health department, told Patch in an email.
