5 Questions with Katy Dombrausky, Featured Artist

Katy Dombrausky is the December Featured Artist at the Mountain Road public library in Pasadena.

The art display can be viewed by the public until Dec. 28, and a reception in her honor will be held at the library from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 18.

Dombrausky is a 2008 graduate of Chesapeake High and is from the Pasadena Longpoint Community. She is currently a full-time art education major at Towson University.

Anne Arundel Patch: What inspires you as an artist?
Katy Dombrausky: What a hard question. Everything! My work is always changing but I guess my biggest inspirations have a lot to do with human behaviors and the struggles we face everyday between being primitive and intelligent beings. One of the bigger pieces I have made is a sculpture that deals with the want to make functional items decorative to the point that they are no longer used for their original function. I like to keep my work kind of corky, I think it's important to have a sense of humor.

Anne Arundel Patch: What is the earliest artwork you remember creating?
Dombrausky: Oh man, I remember raiding the fabric and craft cabinet at home constantly as a kid. The first specific thing I remember making was a purse out of a pair of purple leggings that had a carrot on it. I was probably 5 years old, but I remember being super proud of that purse when I showed it to my mom, haha.

Anne Arundel Patch: Did you ever have a favorite teacher or class at Chesapeake High?
Dombrausky: Absolutely. The first art class I took in high school was photography, which was taught by Mr. Ward. He encouraged my interested in art greatly throughout high school and has had a huge influence on my aspirations to be an art teacher.

Anne Arundel Patch: What courses do you take as an art education major at Towson? What career path do you hope to take? 
Dombrausky: Within art education I have taken a wide variety of studio classes (photography, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, painting, etc.) as well as classes that address concepts, techniques, and controversies within the education system. I am planning to teach high school art when I graduate in 2014, but I would also like to get my graduate degree in fine arts so that teaching college is an option.

Anne Arundel Patch: What do you like to do in your free time?
Dombrausky: In my free time I like to paint (big surprise, I know!), spend time with my pup, and explore. I love seeing what other artists are doing in my community, too. There is always a ton of music, art, and other random events going on in the city, so I try to find new things to do in Baltimore whenever I can.
