Anne Arundel County Natives Inducted Into Sports Hall of Fame
Anne Arundel County natives Justin Daniel, Matt Griswold, Dan Korpon and Josh Papsan will all become Hall of Famers this year.
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Four Anne Arundel County natives will be inducted into their respective colleges' Hall of Fame this year. Joshua Papsan of Pasadena will be inducted into the York College of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame during the school's Fall Fest Weekend Oct. 5. The North County High graduate will be the first men’s lacrosse player to receive this honor.
Papsan is considered the first great Spartan in the sport of men’s lacrosse, the college noted. Papsan helped elevate the program that managed just 10 wins in its initial three seasons to one that registered a then school-record 11 wins during his senior year, York College of Pennsylvania shared. Papsan was a three-year captain and three-time first-team All-Capital Athletic Conference selection. He concluded his career with 131 points on 63 goals and 68 assists – ranking top three in program history in all three categories at the time of his graduation. He still owns the school-record for ground balls with 505. Papsan was also one of York’s primary faceoff specialists and finished his career with 335 wins in 561 attempts – a .597 percentage that still ranks fourth all-time. He led all of NCAA Division III in ground balls per game (9.75) as a senior.
Justin Daniel, an Annapolis High School graduate, was a men's soccer standout for the Shoremen and went on to set records at Washington College where he'll be inducted into its Hall of Fame Oct. 19. Daniel ranks second in Washington College men’s soccer history with 123 career points, while standing second in goals (50) and third in assists (23), according to his alma mater. He was twice named All-Region and garnered All-Centennial Conference honors three times, including first-team honors as a senior in 2000. Daniel scored 16 goals and dished off eight assists as a sophomore in 1998, becoming just the second Shoreman to ever record 40 or more total points in a season. The striker led the Shoremen to an ECAC Tournament berth in 2000.

Severna Park High School graduate Matt Griswold was formally enshrined in the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame recently during a dinner and at the halftime of the home football game versus Old Dominion. Griswold was considered to be one of the finest baseball players in program history during his career in the late 1990s, the school noted. Griswold saw extensive action as a freshman, hitting .276, with five homers and 20 RBI, but he really burst onto the scene as a sophomore in 1997. That season, Griswold posted a team-best .408 average, the highest batting average by a Tech player in 22 seasons, which still ranks as the ninth in school history. Griswold also led the squad in RBIs (69), on-base percentage (.527) and slugging percentage (.697) as a sophomore. He added 13 home runs propelling him to second on the squad. Thanks to Griswold, the Hokies won the Atlantic 10 Conference championship in 1997 and earned an NCAA regional bid. Individual accolades came as well with Griswold earning third-team All-America honors after the season.
Another Severna Park High School graduate, Dan Korpon, is officially a member of the 2019 Salisbury University Athletics Hall of Fame class, which will be recognized at the school's Homecoming weekend with a ceremony Oct. 18. Korpon was a standout men’s lacrosse goaltender for the Sea Gulls and graduated in 2005. He remains one of the best goalies in Salisbury men’s lacrosse history – a two-time All-American and Division III National Goalkeeper of the Year in 2005. He was a four-year letterman and served as team captain in 2005, according to the school. Korpon went 72-6 during his four-year career. He was the starting netminder for three consecutive NCAA national championship teams from 2003 through 2005. Korpon still ranks second in career saves, third in saves in a season and 13th in goalkeeper minutes played. As a junior in 2005, he led Division III in goals-against average.
