Arundel High Parents Upset After Athlete Called A Racist Name
An Arundel High football player reported being called a racist name after a game against Severna Park. Parents want the schools to do more.
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Parents of Arundel High football players are pushing for their school district to do more after athletes say a racist insult was directed at one of their players by a member of the Severna Park team in a game held earlier this month.
Stephon Hutt, whose son attends Arundel High and said he was the target of the insult during the game, wants Anne Arundel County Public Schools to take a "more active approach and publicly condemn that type of behavior." According to the Baltimore Sun, Arundel High's principal praised the football team for not reacting to the insult, but that isn't enough, Hutt said.
“If this is happening in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools stadium, everyone should be informed that this type of behavior should not be tolerated," Hutt said. “It is sending the wrong message to the Anne Arundel students — we don’t care what happens to you. Just get on the field and play ball for us.”

Anne Arundel County police investigated the incident and no charges were filed, but the school is investigating it further. According to the Baltimore Sun, Severna Park High School Principal Patrick Bathras spoke with all students and held a separate discussion with the football team.

“Hate speech is not okay. I don’t want them to feel accustomed to it. This is not okay, period,” Hutt said.
