Neuman Appoints Michael Cox Fire Chief

Michael Cox Jr. is the new fire chief in Anne Arundel County.

Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman announced Tuesday that Michael Cox Jr. is her pick for county fire chief.

Cox, who was serving as acting chief after the retirement of Chief Robert Ray in May, has more than 25 years of experience with the fire department in Anne Arundel County.

"Chief Cox brings a wealth of experience and passion for the job to this position," Neuman said in a press release. "Without a doubt, he is the best man for the job."

Cox, an Edgewater resident and Anne Arundel County resident of 33 years, started his career in firefighting at the age of 16 when he joined the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department.

He is a certified fire officer, an emergency medical technician-paramedic and an emergency services instructor. He also holds three degrees in fire and emergency services.

A formal swearing-in ceremony will be held on July 29, according to the press release.
