There will be delays on I-695 between Westland Boulevard and I-95, transportation officials advise.

BALTIMORE, MD -- Delays are expected on the southwestern part of Interstate 695 near Catonsville and Arbutus Wednesday and Thursday. The State Highway Administration will be conducting an emergency paving project, which has to take place before temperatures drop.

Lane closures will be in effect on the inner loop of the Baltimore beltway.

From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, the right lane will be closed on the inner loop of I-695 between Westland Boulevard and I-95. One lane will also be closed on the ramp from I-95 to the inner loop of I-695.

By 5 a.m. on Thursday, crews will switch back to a single right-lane closure on the ramp and on the I-695 inner loop between I-95 and Westland Boulevard, which may continue into the Thursday evening commute.

The State Highway Administration said major delays were expected during peak hours on the inner loop of I-695 and the approaches to I-695 on the following roads:

  • US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard)
  • I-95
  • US 1 Alternate (Washington Boulevard)
  • Hollins Ferry Road
  • I-895 (Harbor Tunnel Thruway)
  • MD 168 (Nursery Road)
  • MD 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway)
  • MD 170 (Camp Meade Road)
  • MD 648 (Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard)
  • I-97
  • MD 10 (Arundel Expressway)
  • MD 2 (Ritchie Highway)

State transportation officials advise drivers to anticipate delays and take alternate routes if possible.

The closures allow for final paving on the inner loop of I-695 between Westland Boulevard and I-95, as part of the bridge replacement project involving structures over Leeds Avenue, Benson Avenue, US 1 and Amtrak, officials said.

Paving is required when temperatures are at least 50 degrees, and so the work is being done now before temperatures drop.
