Aberdeen Walmart Slated For Extensive Remodel

ABERDEEN, MD ? The Walmart in Aberdeen will be one of eight Maryland stores to undergo renovations as part of the chain's plans to update hundreds of stores nationwide.

In his annual letter to shareholders and associates released April 24, Walmart President and Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon described ways the company was continuing to grow and improve, including with its delivery services. McMillon said, "By the end of this year, in the U.S., we?ll deliver to 95 percent of the population in under three hours."

In a blog post last year, John Furner, then president and CEO of Walmart U.S., announced that the company would build or convert more than 150 stores in the next five years. Walmart also started 12 new projects last year, Furner wrote last year, including converting a smaller location to a Walmart Supercenter. Furner said the remodeling of 650 existing stores would span across 47 states and Puerto Rico.

At Walmart Inc.?s 2025 investment community meeting held earlier this month, it was announced that Sam?s Club will open 30 new locations this year and also will remodel all 600 of its existing clubs.

First announced in 2023, the Store of the Future concept is for brick-and-mortar Walmart stores. Through upgrades and renovations, it aims to "deliver a more modern shopping experience," according to the company.

"Our new and remodeled stores will reflect Walmart's Store of the Future concept, featuring improved layouts, expanded product selections and innovative technology to help our associates better support our customers and make shopping more convenient and enjoyable," Furner wrote in the blog.

Walmart has 57 retail units and more than 17,200 employees in Maryland.

The remodeled stores will feature "big, bold signage," "exciting new displays to better showcase merchandise" and "more of what customers are looking for" through expanded departments and the addition of new items, according to a news release. Walmart is also planning to expand their online pickup and delivery as well as make changes to its pharmacy department, including wider aisles, a new private screening room and privacy checkout areas.
