Aspiring K-9 Officer Hops Into Driver's Seat Of Harford Cruiser

"...all he wants to be when he grows up is a Police K-9," the Harford County Sheriff's Office said of this dog who jumped into a cruiser.

Winston invited himself in during a window of opportunity when a deputy's door was open, the Harford County Sheriff's Office reported.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Somebody wanted a ride-along so badly with a Harford County Sheriff's deputy that he hopped right into the cruiser. Officials said that Winston took a leap of faith and plopped himself into the driver's seat when a deputy got out.

"Poor Winston, a deputy responded to a call and when his door was open, Winston here jumped right in! I guess all he wants to be when he grows up is a Police K9 so he can take a bite out of crime!" the Harford County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Saturday, Sept. 21.

Unfortunately for the eager pup, there isn't a shadow program for the K9s.

"Sorry Winston, we don't have any openings for new K9s," the sheriff's office reported, "and I'm not sure you have the experience we are looking for!"

To be a K-9 with the sheriff's office, a dog must go through the Maryland State Police academy with a handler.

Those who responded to the Harford County Sheriff's Office Facebook post were rooting for Winston.

"Don't give up on your dream Winston!!!" one woman posted.

"Sweet, can you make him a reserve officer?" another commented.

"Give full membership to K9 auxiliary," one man said, along those lines.

There were also some doggone funny remarks. Here are a few:

  • "License, registration, and Pupperoni, please."
  • "Will work for rubs."
  • "Wonder if he would've gotten in, if it was the back door open."
  • " Winston would look good in blue."
