Bassmaster Fishing Tournament Postponed In Harford County

Unsafe boating conditions have led to a change of plans for the Bassmaster tournament, slated for this weekend in the Upper Chesapeake Bay.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — A fishing tournament that was slated for this week in Harford County has been postponed. A new date for the Huk Bassmaster Elite has not been set yet, but officials say that organizers are meeting in the coming days to discuss options for rescheduling.

The tournament was supposed to begin Thursday, July 26, and run through Sunday, July 29, with fishing in the Upper Chesapeake Bay.

After the state was pummeled with rain and floods, the leaders of the tournament announced Thursday morning that they have decided to postpone the competition for safety reasons.

“Our number one priority is the safety of our anglers and anyone else who might be on the waters of the Upper Chesapeake Bay,” B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon said in a statement. “After consulting with authorities regarding increased water releases, debris and current hazardous conditions on tournament waters, B.A.S.S. is postponing this week's event.”

The tournament was set to take off from Flying Point Park in Edgewood.

Waters across the region have risen after inches upon inches of rain, and the Conowingo Dam has opened more than a dozen gates to deal with the increased flow of the Susquehanna River.

"Boaters on the Chesapeake, please be careful. Dangerous debris will be everywhere," Maryland Natural Resources Police advised Thursday morning.

Officials say the Bassmaster Elite tournament is likely to be rescheduled for later in the 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series season, which concludes with the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship in September.
