Bel Air Cub Scouts Deliver Holiday Gifts To First Responders

Cub Scouts in Bel Air showed their thanks to emergency personnel in a sweet way — with a "candy survival kit."

BEL AIR, MD — Bel Air Cub Scouts gave out 200 gifts as a way of saying thank you to first responders in their community. The Bel Air Police Department, Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company and Harford County Sheriff's Office received sweet treats during a presentation Thursday at the American Legion in Bel Air.

"Part of being a scout is community service," Pack 830 Cubmaster Jeff Thomas told Patch. Since these agencies provide services to the community and have allowed the scouts to come into their workplaces, "we decided it would be good to give them a holiday treat."

Each bag was personalized by a scout family, Thomas said.

"It was a big hit with both the scouts and the first responders," Thomas reported.

Cub Scouts is a youth development program offered under the umbrella of Boy Scouts of America and is open to those 6 to 11 years old. Children work on good citizenship, character development, fitness and sportsmanship, among other skills, as they earn badges and take adventures together.

"Another neat place part about this," Thomas said of Thursday's event, "was the fact at the end of the project the scouts got to put a face to the project and see who they were helping."
