The volunteer organization Chesapeake Search Dogs assisted with the search in early April, which officials said resulted in the recovery of Scharfe's body. Authorities said this week that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is still investigating the cause of death.

"This was not the outcome any of us were wanting, but are hopeful that this will bring the family peace," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
