BEL AIR, MD ? The Route 24 Ale House is expanding, adding an outdoor area to the premises.

"Outdoor space is definitely the wave of the future," owner Jason Davis told Patch, standing on the newly installed patio at his restaurant off Bel Air South Parkway. "People like being outside."

As many establishments did, he installed a tent next to the restaurant during the coronavirus pandemic. It came down July 9, he said.

The Harford County Liquor Control Board approved of his new patio, which will include 13 tables, during its Wednesday morning meeting. That means alcohol can be served there.

Dimensions of the patio are 22 by 62 feet, and it has already been approved by the county, Davis told the liquor board.

Plans call for 52 seats, he said, for a total of 150 seats, which is the maximum the county will allow given the number of bathrooms the restaurant has.

The patio is the first phase of a two-phase project, Davis said.

During the next phase, the business will add an awning like The Local recently did, Davis said. It will also put TVs and sound system outside.

?We?re going to make it almost like a private event space or overflow space for the restaurant,? Davis told Patch.

Initially, before the awning arrives, the patio will be weather permitting and seasonal.

"I think it?s a great idea," Liquor Board Commissioner Wayne Goddard said, ensuring access to alcohol would be contained.

Fencing around the patio will be complete in about three weeks, Davis told Patch.

The goal is for the awning to be installed by the end of the year.
