Severe Thunderstorm Watch Expires In Maryland

The National Weather Service warned of 60 mph wind gusts in parts of Maryland as thunderstorms passed through the state.

MARYLAND — Severe thunderstorm warnings were posted around the Baltimore-Washington metro area Wednesday evening as storms rolled through the region. The National Weather Service placed every jurisdiction in the state under a severe thunderstorm watch as well.

A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for these areas until 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 26:

  • Allegany County
  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County
  • Calvert County
  • Caroline County
  • Carroll County
  • Cecil County
  • Charles County
  • Dorchester County
  • Frederick County
  • Garrett County
  • Harford County
  • Howard County
  • Kent County
  • Montgomery County
  • Prince George's County
  • Queen Anne's County
  • Somerset County
  • St. Mary's County
  • Talbot County
  • Washington County
  • Wicomico County
  • Worcester County

Strong winds and large hail were possible during the watch period, forecasters say.

These severe thunderstorm warnings have expired:

  • A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Carroll County until 8 p.m. During the severe thunderstorm warning period, people should go inside to stay safe from wind and lightning. Homes and vehicles may be damaged by falling trees and large branches. Do not drive underneath wooded areas until the threat has passed, officials advised. Roads may become blocked by downed trees, and localized power outages are possible, according to the warning, which said objects that have not been secured may be thrown about.People should move to an interior room on the lowest level during the storm, officials advised.
  • A severe thunderstorm warning expired at 7:30 p.m for Frederick, Montgomery and Washington counties.
  • Harford and Cecil counties were under a severe thunderstorm warning until 7:15 p.m. Radar detected a severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts about 8 miles northeast of Havre de Grace. The storm was moving northeast at 25 mph, officials reported at 6:45 p.m. Radar also detected a severe thunderstorm near Aberdeen with 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail before 6:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

  • Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties were under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Severe thunderstorms with 60 mph wind gusts were on a line from Ellicott City to Columbia to near Fairland and were moving east at 35 mph, officials said before 5:30 p.m.
  • Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties were under a separate severe thunderstorm warning until 6:45 p.m.
