Winter Weather Advisories Posted Across Maryland

Much of Maryland is under a winter storm weather advisory Thursday to Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

MARYLAND — The Baltimore-Washington metro area and much of Maryland is under a winter weather advisory for a mix of snow and sleet. A previously issued winter storm warning is canceled, the National Weather Service advised Thursday afternoon.

Drivers should anticipate slippery road conditions, which may affect the evening commute.

Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 1 inch and ice accumulations of up to 0.1 inch could accumulate between 1 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday, according to the advisory, which applies to Baltimore City and Allegany, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

PREVIOUS REPORT (EXPIRED) — Heavy snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain are in the forecast Thursday for much of Maryland, prompting the National Weather Service to issue alerts across the state.

Parts of central and northern Maryland could see 4 to 8 inches of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain by Friday morning. Ice could be about 0.1 inch.

The Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area is likely to see 3 to 6 inches of snow, based on the projections, with up to 0.25 inch ice that could lead to outages and make travel nearly impossible.

Western Maryland may get the heaviest snow, with 6 to 10 inches projected. Southern Maryland may see 1 to 3 inches of accumulation, while the Eastern Shore may see 1 to 2 inches of snow and possibly flooding from heavy rain Thursday afternoon and evening.

Central And Northern Maryland

Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard and Montgomery are under a winter storm warning from 3 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday.

Here is the time frame for snow Thursday, according to the warning:

  • 3 to 5 a.m. — Snow will overspread the area.
  • Through midday — Snow will be heaviest.
  • Thursday afternoon and night — Snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain.

Snow may fall at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, and visibility may be reduced to 0.25 mile.

Due to icy and slippery conditions, people should watch their first few steps outside on stairs, driveways and sidewalks.

Travel could be very difficult, possibly impacting the morning or evening commute.

If people must drive, they should keep an extra flashlight as well as food and water in their vehicles.

Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area

Anne Arundel, Cecil, Prince George's counties as well as southern Baltimore, central and southeast Montgomery, central and southeast Howard and southeast Harford counties are under a separate winter storm warning from 3 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday. They could see 3 to 6 inches of snow and up to 0.25 inch ice.

Here is the time frame for wintry weather in these areas Thursday, according to the warning:

  • 3 to 5 a.m. — Snow will begin.
  • Late morning and early afternoon — Snow will change to a mix of sleet and freezing rain.

Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice, and travel could be nearly impossible, according to the warning.

Western, Southern and Eastern Maryland

Allegany and Garrett counties are under a separate winter storm warning from midnight Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday calling for heavy snow plus some freezing rain and sleet. Snow accumulation may total 6 to 10 inches. Ice accumulation from freezing rain could be less than 0.1 inch.

In southern Maryland, a winter weather advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday for mixed precipitation in Calvert and St. Mary's counties. Snow could total 1 to 3 inches, and freezing rain may add up to 0.1 to 0.2 inches ice.

On the Eastern Shore, Dorchester and Wicomico counties are under a hazardous weather outlook. A wintry mix of 1 to 2 inches of snow and a light glaze of ice are possible Thursday, followed by heavy rain Thursday afternoon and evening. Flooding could also occur.

Kent County is under a winter storm watch from 4 a.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Friday for snow and sleet of 4 to 6 inches, with up to 0.1 inch ice possible. Snow will blanket the area Thursday, with sleet and/or freezing rain mixing in later Thursday afternoon, particularly near, south and east of Interstate 95. Light wintry weather may continue into the daytime Friday, according to the winter storm watch.
