MARYLAND — Sleet and freezing rain could make roads icy across Maryland Saturday, prompting the National Weather Service to place much of the state under a winter weather advisory.

Less than 1 inch of snow and up t0 0.1 inch ice could accumulate during the advisory period, from 7 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday, forecasters say.

"Freezing rain and drizzle has caused icy roadways in our area, and this is expected to continue through this evening as temperatures remain below freezing," the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement Saturday morning. "Several accidents have been reported across the area due to icy roadways."
