BETHESDA, MD — After losing Shoppers Food Warehouse last year, North Bethesda's White Flint Plaza is getting a new grocery store.

ALDI, a German-based discount grocer, has signed a lease with landlord Combined Properties for a 21,628-square-foot space. The new location, set to open in late 2021, takes over a portion of the old Shoppers supermarket — which closed down 14 months ago.

"We are elated to announce the return of a respected grocer to White Flint Plaza," Jonathan Shartar, senior vice president at Combined Properties, said. "ALDI will be beneficial to the broader community, including the residents of the surrounding multifamily communities currently in development. A grocery store brings essential daily traffic that, in turn, benefits all merchants at the center."

ALDI will join a number of existing retailers at White Flint Plaza, including HomeGoods, PetSmart, and Advance Auto. A 335-apartment community, called Harwood Flats, is being built next door.

The grocery chain has multiple locations in Montgomery County, including Rockville, Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and Germantown.
