Bethesda's La Madeleine Country French Cafe Celebrates National Croissant Day
La Madeleine Country French Café to give free croissants on National Croissant Day.

WHAT: La Madeleine Country French Café, a local favorite for country French cuisine, fresh baked breads and handcrafted pâtisseries, is celebrating a French favorite by offering its loyal guests a free butter croissant for National Croissant Day on Saturday, January 30, 2016.
Legend has it that shortly after Marie Antoinette became queen in the 18th century, she introduced the croissant to France. Originally from Austria, she found herself homesick for her favorite Viennese pastry and requested the Kipfel, which later became known as croissant and gained popularity throughout France.
WHY: It is no secret that the croissant is the single most recognized and loved French treat. La Madeleine plans to showcase its love for the treat on National Croissant Day by rewarding guests with a free, fresh baked butter croissant.

CROISSANT FUN FACTS:
· The croissant became the French national product in 1920
· The croissant started as a luxury product, but by the end of the 19th century, it was middle-class (the rich preferred a good brioche)
· Before the modern croissant, puff pastry was used as a garnish or shell, not to eat on its own
