Cicada Invasion: Send Patch Your Photos Of The New Bugs In Town

MARYLAND — From the roar of the cicadas to their seeming desire to fly right into you, they're impossible to miss. Brood X — the name of the cicadas in this 17-year cycle — appeared this spring.

The adult cicadas won't be around for too long, likely dying off in the next few weeks. Entomologist Michael Raupp from the University of Maryland told WBAL that the ground will look like a battleground when they reach the end of their life cycle.
"It is cicadas gone wild but they're teenagers, only 17 years old. It's their day in the sun," Raupp told WBAL. "There's been a lot of crazy romance in the treetops."

Marylanders have found creative uses for their new visitors, including one chocolatier whose chocolate-covered cicadas are selling fast and a local family that is competing to see how many cicadas they can each count.
