Montgomery County Adds 14 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Hits 70,712

Montgomery County recorded 14 new COVID-19 cases Monday, as well as two more deaths associated with the virus.

BETHESDA, MD — Health officials in Montgomery County added 14 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, according to official data, pushing its pandemic total to 70,712.

The county has only recorded 14 new daily infections two other times — once on May 6, 2021, and the other on March 24, 2020.

In the last 24 hours, health officials registered two new coronavirus-related deaths. That pushes the local death toll to 1,497.

Another 46 residents are believed to have died from the virus without ever getting tested. For now, they are considered "probable deaths."

Montgomery County — which is home to roughly 1 million people — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second-highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 84,813, according to the latest figures.

Across Maryland, there have been 458,520 cases, 8,831 confirmed deaths, and 191 "probable deaths." Of the 448 people currently being hospitalized statewide, 118 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The positivity rate measures the percentage of COVID-19 tests that come back positive in a one-week span. According to data released Monday, Maryland's test positivity rate is 2.04 percent. In Montgomery County, it's 1.12 percent — down from 1.21 percent the day before.

To date, Maryland has administered 5,913,066 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Among those, 3,137,444 were first doses and 2,549,104 were second doses.

In Montgomery County, 643,722 residents (61.2 percent) have received their first dose. A total of 529,482 residents (50.4 percent) have already gotten their second and final shot.
