National Institutes of Health to Host Earth Day Screenings of PROJECT: ICE

NIH screens timely Great Lakes, Climate Change documentary. Presented by NIH and the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital.

April 14, 2016

Washington, D.C. – PROJECT: ICE, the award-winning 4K Great Lakes documentary feature film from director William Kleinert, will screen in Bethesda, Maryland on Friday, April 22 at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM, presented by National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital. This film concerning diminished Great Lakes ice comes at a pressing time when new research detailing Antarctic ice loss shows that sea levels could rise nearly four feet, twice as much as previously predicted, unless societies make sharp cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

PROJECT: ICE reveals the story of the Great Lakes through the prism of ice, from the crossroads of history, science and climate change.

PROJECT: ICE is an "Official Selection" of eighteen festivals from Washington, DC to Los Angeles, from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Bangalore, India, including opening the 2015 Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital. The film won the "Award for Excellence in Filmmaking" from the Canada International Film Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, "Best Documentary" at the East Lansing Film Festival, "Awards Finalist Honors" at the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival in Vermont and Audience Choice Award for "Best Documentary Feature" at the Soo Film Festival in Michigan.

North America’s five Great Lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario – contain a staggering twenty percent of all the fresh surface water on the planet. Lake Superior alone contains ten percent of Earth’s fresh surface water. Formed by ice, filled by ice, and often covered with ice, the Great Lakes encapsulate human exploration, migration, and development. Ice sits at the heart of it all.

PROJECT: ICE reveals an indisputable record of increasing water temperatures and strikingly diminished ice cover. It’s an environmental and economic wake up call from the heartland of the North America, a basin that is home to 40 million Americans and Canadians.
