The American Century is about to dawn as turmoil swirls in Pittsburgh's Hill District over a tragedy at the local mill. Citizen Barlow arrives to have his soul cleansed by Aunt Esther, the 285-year-old soothsayer (yes, that's 285). But one man's redemption could end the uneasy calm holding this African-American community together. With a focus on America, Black Americans and the human soul, this is the first chapter of August Wilson's monumental play cycle, directed here by Timothy Douglas. It will be Douglas' third time directing "Gem of the Ocean." Scenic Designer Tony Cisek is making special use of spiritual murals; Costume Designer Kara Harmon includes ceremonial masks custom made for Roundhouse; Lighting Designer Andrew Cissna utilizes representations of the gas and candle lighting predominant during the early 20th century when the show is set.
Gem of the Ocean runs from November 28 through December 23 at the Roundhouse Theatre in Bethesda, close to the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and East-West Highway. Free tickets are available to all teens and college students. Go to roundhousetheatre.org or call 240-644-1100.
