For Second Time This Month, County Adds Fewer Than 25 New Cases

For the second time this month, Montgomery County has registered fewer than 25 COVID-19 cases in a day.

BETHESDA, MD — Monday marks the second time this month that Montgomery County has recorded fewer than 25 daily COVID-19 cases.

In the last 24 hours, Maryland's most populous jurisdiction reported 24 new coronavirus cases, pushing its cumulative total to 70,257.

The last time health officials saw fewer than 25 daily cases was on May 6, when there were 14 new infections. The first time it happened this year was on April 19, when there were 23 recorded infections.

One new coronavirus-related death was confirmed overnight in Montgomery County, public health data showed. Monday's addition pushes the local death toll to 1,483.

The latest fatality count does not include the 46 others whose deaths were linked to the virus but never confirmed by a lab test. For now, they are considered "probable deaths."

Montgomery County — which is home to roughly 1 million people — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second-highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 83,912, according to the latest figures.

Across Maryland, there have been 453,401 cases, 8,670 confirmed deaths, and 191 "probable deaths." Of the 798 people currently being hospitalized statewide, 213 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The positivity rate measures the percentage of COVID-19 tests that come back positive in a one-week span. According to data released Monday, Maryland's test positivity rate is 3.06 percent. In Montgomery County, it's 1.64 percent — down from 1.83 percent the day before.

To date, Maryland has administered 5,256,617 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Among those, 2,894,102 were first doses and 2,157,668 were second doses.

In Montgomery County, 590,439 residents (56.2 percent) have received their first dose. A total of 447,004 residents (42.5 percent) have already gotten their second and final shot.
