RoundHouse Theatre's current production, "Small Mouth Sounds," is directed by its Artistic Director Ryan Rilette. It focuses on the experiences of six characters at a silent retreat. Rilette commented early on in the rehearsal process that "...the fact that this is a play that takes place primarily in silence" was going to be "an interesting exercise." When actors/characters cannot speak, he emphasized, "...you end up figuring out who somebody is based on the smallest clues that you have." Rilette feels that playwright Bess Wohl leads us to "understand that we all suffer, and that you just need to sit with the suffering - and be okay with the suffering...that's where we find our shared humanity. It is in the fact that we all suffer." While there are plenty of serious moments in the show, there is also a good deal of humor, both verbal and visual. "Small Mouth Sounds" runs through September 23rd.
