POTOMAC, MD — An injured bald eagle recuperating at a Montgomery County raptor center was likely struck by a car while she was feeding on an animal carcass, experts say.

The female eagle was named “Trust” by the Animal Services Division officer who rescued the bird.

Officials received calls Thursday morning about an injured eagle in the area of River Road and Riverwood Drive. Animal Services Division Officer Jennifer Gill talked with a resident who saw the eagle walk into the woods.

Gill found the eagle, which appeared to have an injury that prevented it from flying. Once the eagle was wrapped in towels, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Officer Danny Thomas helped place the raptor in a carrier. Officers took the bird to the Owl Moon Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Boyds specializing in birds of prey.

Staffers at the raptor center said on its Facebook page that Trust was likely hit by a vehicle on River Road, probably while feeding on a nearby roadside deer carcass. The bird suffered some internal bleeding and a shoulder injury.

Trusted appeared to feel somewhat better Thursday night after receiving fluids, and medicine for pain and inflammation. She will travel to Bennett Creek Animal Hospital for X-rays and further evaluation when she is stable and stronger, the staff said.

Montgomery County Police Captain David Falcinelli, commander of the 2nd District, says that the Bethesda area has experienced an increase in underage drinking incidents over the last few months.
