1790 Plantation Home Of Bowie's Namesake On Sale For $1 Million
This Bowie house used to be part of a tobacco plantation owned by a former governor. Now, its owners are trying to sell it for $1 million.

BOWIE, MD — The plantation house and birthplace of Oden Bowie, the namesake of the city of Bowie and Maryland's 34th governor, is on sale for $1 million. This colonial mansion sits on 10 acres that used to be part of a tobacco plantation. Bowie was one of the largest slave holders in Prince George's County, holding as many as 103 slaves at one point.
Bowie was born in 1826. He went to school at St. John's College in Annapolis and St. Mary's College in Baltimore. After he graduated from St. Mary's College in 1845, Bowie joined the army during the Mexican-American war, eventually becoming a captain. He had seven children, and was married to Alice Carter.
Bowie entered the political world in 1849 when he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. He later joined the state senate in 1867. Soon after, Bowie was elected governor in 1869. He left office in 1872, and died in 1894.

The 6,600-square-foot house has eight fireplaces and has been under renovation since 2017 when the current owners bought it for $550,000. The house has been on the market for more than 300 days, according to realtor.com. It is located at 4600 Fairview Vista Drive.
