Vacant Bowie Sears Redevelopment Plan Calls For 800 Apartments

Developers could build 800 new apartments and a hotel where the Sears in Bowie Town Center currently sits vacant.

BOWIE, MD — Developers are considering building 800 apartments and a hotel where the Sears in Bowie Town Center currently sits vacant. Before building the development, the proposal must first pass the Bowie City Council and Prince George's County Council.

The Bowie Advisory Planning Board was supposed to consider the plan during its Tuesday night meeting. A report said the board approved the developer's request to move the meeting to July 28, however.

The city council will now consider the proposal at its Aug. 3 meeting. The developer, Seritage, asked to postpone the hearings so it could have more time to discuss the plan with the owners of the neighboring property.

Redeveloping this area would require the County Council to amend the Bowie Town Center Basic Plan. The plan currently caps the number of residential units allowed in the area. Seritage's proposal seeks to increase that cap.

If approved, the on-site hotel could have no more than 150 rooms. Seritage's request also includes permission to build retail, restaurant and office spaces on the site.
