Bites Nearby: Hard Times Cafe

Good things to eat, only a short distance away.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, College Park Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Overview: If you've had a rough day, or it's cold, or it's Wednesday: you deserve a bowl of chili.

Decor: Like its chili, the decor of Hard Times is a no-frills affair. But you won't be looking at the decor. You will be looking at your chili as it makes its way into your mouth.

Appetizers: Hard Times offers a bevy of appetizers, some of which aren't even slathered in chili. Their most notable chili alternative is probably chicken wings, which come grilled or boneless, and in Original Texas, Chili Lime, Honey BBQ, Old Bay or Teriyaki.

Entrees: Well, chili. At Hard Times, you get your choice between four different kinds: Texas, Cincinnati, Terlingua Red and Vegetarian. Ask your server for a sample dish, and debate the merits of each with your fellow diners. In my experience, everyone has one chili that immediately speaks to them, not unlike the sorting hat of Harry Potter fame. You can also get salads, sandwiches and burgers.

Service: Excellent. The servers are always friendly, and ready to refill your iced tea or ply you with more comfort food.

Signature Dish: If you can't guess, you haven't been paying attention.
